Welcome someone home today!

August 12, 2008; Gospel Mt 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

The disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?”
He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. What is your opinion?
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.”

Welcome someone home today!

Of the Ten Reasons Catholics return to the Church; the Number ONE Reason is because they hunger for the Eucharist. There is an intense hunger in people's lives which is only fullfilled in the reception of the Body and Blood, soun and divinity of Jesus.

Catholics Returning Home "after Christmas" Sessions

Do you know someone who has left the Church? Most of us do not have to look very far to find non-practicing Catholics” in our circle of family and friends. Many of us are concerned about these loved ones however we don’t know how to help them. Obviously, most of them are searching, but how can we help them find their way home?

As baptized, practicing Catholics we have a precious gift of faith and love from the Lord that needs to be shared with our non-practicing brothers and sisters. First, we need to pray for them. Secondly, we need to extend a personal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church. Most non-practicing Catholics are waiting for an invitation to return. Many mistakenly think they are excommunicated and are not welcome to return for a variety of reasons.

Many non-practicing Catholics carry a tremendous amount of guilt and misinformation about the Church so they are afraid of approaching the Church for fear of being rejected. You can make a tremendous difference in someone’ s life simply by reaching out to them and telling them that we miss them and would like for them to come back home to our Church family.

Eight Hawaii parishes are offering a six-week series entitled “Catholics Returning Home” beginning. The sessions are for non-practicing Catholics who are seeking answers to questions about returning to the church. If you know someone who has left the church, please invite him or her to join us.

CRH Follow-up Suggestions

Many have asked about some sort of Follow-up for our returning Catholics.

Here's what the parish team at St. John Vianney has done:

"We invited all participants so far to SJV's Advent Wreath making and spaghetti dinner. We had two couples, one from the first and one from the second sessions, attend. It was fun and a way to get to know them better and have them become comfortable with parish activities."

Please share your suggestions and thoughts.

What is Purgatory?

References from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, online at: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm - it has a great search engine. Simply search on "purgatory" and the following are found. When you go to the written book or website, do spend time to read the valuable footnotes.

Paragraphs: 1031; 1472; 1475; and 1498.

Excerpt: "The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire.

"Googling" purgatory, yields many great resources; and please exercise discretion, since purgatory is a Catholic given by the Church.

What is the Trinity?

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 237
The Trinity is a mystery of faith in the strict sense, one of the "mysteries that are hidden in God, which can never be known unless they are revealed by God". To be sure, God has left traces of his Trinitarian being in his work of creation and in his Revelation throughout the Old Testament. But his inmost Being as Holy Trinity is a mystery that is inaccessible to reason alone or even to Israel's faith before the Incarnation of God's Son and the sending of the Holy Spirit.
